Erwin Wurm exhibition
BAD PEOPLE
Erwin Wurm has been exploring sculpture in various media since the 1980s, working pointedly on the concept of sculpture
His sculpture series Bad People, characterized by paradoxical depictions of the human form, was created at the Gmundner Keramik Manufactory. Noses, ears, and mouths—taken from human facial physiognomy—are recontextualized and become part of figures and inflated faces that embody the all-too-human. Erwin Wurm’s ceramic sculptures reveal their immediate genesis: a new creation born from destruction, deformation, and distortion. They emphasize the absurd, gestural expression, physicality, and the creative possibilities of clay as a medium. Ceramics as a means of artistic expression corresponds to Wurm’s performative approach and is once again highly relevant in contemporary art.
In addition to the focus on photography at the Francisco Carolinum Linz and sculpture at the „Marmorschlössl“ in Bad Ischl, Erwin Wurm presents a third exhibition as part of his major solo show in collaboration with OÖ Landes-Kultur GmbH.

Erwin Wurm
Erwin Wurm (born 1954 in Bruck an der Mur) is a prominent contemporary artist who challenges conventional notions of art through his sculptures, installations, and performances. He frequently works with everyday objects, transforming them into humorous, exaggerated, or absurd forms—such as inflated cars or distorted houses. Through these transformations, he addresses social issues like consumerism, body image, and the absurdity of modern lifestyles. Wurm’s work moves fluidly between sculpture, conceptual art, and social critique, characterized by a playful yet thought-provoking approach. He is regarded as one of the most successful artists of our time.
